The Truth About Water Content

my customers  frequently keep repeating the same question when they wanna purchase a new contact lens

and i keep repeating answer them with the same answer eeeewwwwww~

mostly,, my customers will ask about water content

"how much is this contact lens' water content..??"

"i'm looking for a high water content, because it is said that it more comfy to use and don't easily get dry"

"why you recommend the lowest water content? it's dry quickly, rite?"

okaaayyy,, so this time i will give you any information about water content of a contact lens

Soft contact lenses are made of a combination of hydrophilic ("water-loving") polymers that hold water to keep the lenses moist and comfortable. The percentage of water content in soft contacts can vary widely — from about 38 to 79 percent.

Intuitively, you might think that if your eyes are dry you need a higher-water-content lens, but in fact the opposite may be true. A high-water-content lens may lose much of its moisture more easily due to environmental influences.

Also, if your eyes are inherently dry and you wear high-water lenses, the lenses may be drawing tears away from your eyes to stay properly hydrated, thereby increasing your eye dryness. If this is the case, your eye doctor may switch you to a contact lens with a lower water content.

 Water content is related to time disposable

38% - 42% is the common water content that used for a year contact lens

Quite low, rite?

if u can compared to a 6 months contact lens,, they have higher water content

i guess about 45-60% 

some will say,, higher water content is the better one,, because the more oxygen can pass through the lens into the surface of your eyes


well,, this is the truth about water content

 

a. 38% - 42% water content is a common water content for a year contact lens.

b. Water content  has no relation with any quality or comfy of a contact lens (it more depends on it's material)

c. the higher water content makes the contact lens has shorter period to be able to use comfortably

High water content will absorb more water from our eyes to keep the water content

for instance,, like this

38% VS 55%

the contact lens with 38% water content will absorb water as much as it needs to keep the water content in 38%

while,  contact lens with 55% water content will absorb water as much as it needs to keep the water content in 55%

or, in case they can absorb as much as they need it, they will cause dryness

and it can affect the period of the lens

got it?

that's why,, the higher water content will cause dryness faster than the low one

but,, in any cases,, contact lens with a high water content has comfy just as same as the low water content

maybe some of you will ask about a year contact lens with high water content such as i.fairy, luxury babe, super barbie

they have high water content, IMO, but they are comfy to use

while,, it will just occur for 6-8 months (IMO)

because i ever compared my dueba to my super barbie lens

what i found?

DUEBA --> 38% water content

i could use more than 10 hours in a day and i could use it for more than 10 months

SUPER BARBIE --> 55% water content

i just could use it for about 6 hours in a day,, and i could use it for about 9 months only

after it?

i dunno whether i was not in the well condition or it was indeed the lens itself,, they caused redness faster than before and sometimes felt a bit scotch in my eyes (╥﹏╥)

ah,,, FYI,, i have a freakin sensitive eyes so this is my pure opinion

as a conclusion

 a high water content can cause dryness faster than the lower one, and for contact lens such as i.fairy which IMO pretty comfy, it has shorter period to be able to use comfortably 


But,, if you already feel comfortable with the water content of your contact lens you use right now,, it's okaayy ^^
